Gianmarco De Francisci Morales  –  Research Leader at ISI Foundation

Gianmarco De Francisci Morales works as a Research Leader at ISI Foundation. In the past he worked as a Scientist at QCRI, as a Visiting Scientist at Aalto University, as a Research Scientist at Yahoo Labs, and as a Research Associate at the HPC Lab of ISTI-CNR.

He holds a Ph.D. in CSE (Computer Science and Engineering) from IMT Lucca, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Computer Engineering from University of Catania.

His main research interests are scalable data mining and data-intensive scalable computing. Hence, he is a heavy user of the Apache Hadoop ecosystem. He is a committer for Pig, and a contributor for Hadoop, Giraph, Storm, Kafka, S4, and Grafos. He is also a PPMC member and one of the original creators of SAMOA, a platform for mining big data streams.

His Ph.D. thesis explored the issues around massive-scale Web mining using DISC.
“Big Data and the Web: Algorithms for Data Intensive Scalable Computing”.

His master’s thesis dealt with parallel multi-objective genetic algorithms for optimization of embedded systems. The software he contributed to is open source: Epic-Explorer.
